Ah, John and George, we miss ye.
Well said.

I always thought of "Her Majesty" as being a weird little joke that someone tells after something really serious has happened, kinda breaking the silence and bringing everyone out of it. But I take music way too seriously.

Agree somewhat with Disintegration, although nostalgia might play a part in that for some of the album. I don't really feel too broken up when I hear "Fascination Street", it actually makes me happy and want to rock out...stiil, "Pictures of You" remains devastating.

I can't believe no one has brought up The Red House Painters. For my money, Red House Painters [i] (a.k.a. Grace Cathedral Park) is one hell of a lump-in-the-throat album.

Oh yeah, although it's not always a physical lump in the throat, the Meadowlands has that quality, and several songs, especially "She Sends Kisses" are just devastating.

Here's a couple more:
Townes Van Zandt - Live At The Old Quarter
Mojave 3 - Ask Me Tomorrow (Love Songs on the Radio is sooooo sad and beautiful)

Others:
Beck - Sea Change
Elbow - Asleep in the Back
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - The Blue Trees
Mark Knopfler - The Ragpicker's Dream
Mull Historical Society - Us

I can't listen to Asleep In the Back all the way through. Ever. By the end of "Red" I'm done.

I've gotta agree with the aforementioned Abby Road and What's Goin' On and add these three:

Stone Roses - Stone Roses (especially the end of I Am the Resurrection)
Afghan Whigs - Black Love (bitter gut wrenching dispair throughout)
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (the prophetic lines of Jesus Etc.)

There are definitely two to three tracks (Anyday Now, Bitten by the Tailfly, and Don't mix your drinks) I skip everytime as well, but Red, Powder Blue, Asleep in the Back, Newborn, and Scattered Black and Whites are the lump builders.

Am I the only one who doesn't understand what is so emotionally sad and wrenching about Abbey Road that it makes you get all lump-throated and misty-eyed? How does Mean Mister Mustard, She Came In Through The Bedroom Window, and Carry The Weight bring tears...you're dealing with a bunch of half-finished songs that are all basically playful jokes with a little bit of hippie sentimentality. Yeah some of the ballads are nice, but of all the albums I've seen here, I just don't see anyone becoming lump-throated from "She's So Heavy" and "Maxwell's Silver Hammer".

I'm surprised no one has put down any Nick Drake. Sad, sentimental, moving stuff. Also, how about The Scud Mountain Boys' album Massachusetes, there's some teary-eyed beautiful, sad music.

Eels: Electro-Shock Blues (especially the track "Going to Your Funeral", which eerily mirrored the feelings I had when a closed friend died).

I completely agree about "Jesus Etc." from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. The song is so sadly beautiful that I don't really care what it's about. Must admit, it's hard to not think it's about Sept 11th, even though the track was recorded well before then.

Los Lobos: "Be Still" from The Neighborhood

Everything from the Velvet Underground's 3rd album (NOT VU and Nico). Some sample lines: "Candy says I've come to hate my body and all that it requires in this world". "In some kinds of love, the possibilities are endless". "If you close the door, the night could last forever".

Syd Barrett: hell, anything by him, but I was particularly struck by "Wined and Dined".

I was just looking through my own collection and came across two more that get me everytime:

R.E.M-Automatic For The People. And obviously it's the song 'Everybody Hurts' that really hits me. When I first heard that track, it saved me. Today, listening to it reassures me.

Big Star-Third/Sister Lovers. This is an incredible album, the best thing Alex Chilton ever produced. Not only is this one of the bleakest records ever made, but it was the final studio effort from what was (at the time) a sadly overlooked band.

Yes, that's the track that does it to me. The whole album just has a lovely sadness to it if you know what I mean. Goddamn is that a great album!

I guess I get more of a lump from musical interludes than from lyrics.
I come from the age where albums, 8-tracks, or cassettes were played from beginning to end. When you dropped the needle on the turntable, you didn't get up until the side was over. Abbey Road was one of many that warranted a full listen to both sides every time.
The fact that it was their last album and was loaded with divergent sounds made The End more poignant.
Some concept albums come to mind for this thread, namely Thick As A Brick, Tommy, Quadrophenia, and Operation Mindcrime. More albums that demanded a full listen. I'll think of more...
