The Waiting Room

Hello You.

In order to communicate as efficiently as possible with the WOXY listenership we at this here so-called radio show The Waiting Room have decided to instigate a continuing series of admin posts on a dedicated thread.

These admin posts will contain details of upcoming shows, interviews, sessions, gossip, nonsense & general hoo-hah. They will also be a means for you, The Listening Few, to chatter/question/bemoan all things TWR.

This, then, is our first bit of admin:

Due to WOXY decamping to SXSW for the week, + a couple of other reasons we've already flogged to death by way of an excuse, this week on WOXY you can hear a repeat of one of our earlier shows.

The show'll begin the usual time on Saturday 21st @ 8am ET / 12pm GMT & will be repeated Sunday 22nd @ 4pm ET & 8pm GMT.

Just because it is a repeat don't mean you should miss it, mmkay?

That said, to compensate for the lack of 'newness' in this week's fraudcast, ½DC + TWoTH have taken it upon themselves to record a special one off non-WOXY podcast for you, The Listening Few, to enjoy.

This podcast, what'll be available from 11am ET / 3pm GMT (Saturday 21st March), will never be aired on WOXY & is simply a little extra "something" for your weekend.

Said podcast is predetermined to contain a basketful of new songs by bands/artists along the very lines of:

Great Northern + Elf Power + Squirrelhouse + Casiokids + The Answering Machine + Pree + Kill It Kid + Portico + Mimicking Birds + The Guggenheim Grotto + Southeast Engine + Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears + The Tiny + The Leisure Society
+ a SXSW-style goodie bag of many more.

Tune in, then, why don't you, via www.TWRHQ.com.

I wish they would have come up with a more original name for their radio show. There have been countless shows under the name "The Waiting Room", including a Sunday night show on the old 97.3 Channel Z, after it was called LoCal Sundays.

I will check it out though. It seems that there are some no name bands that WOXY isn't covering on there.

Hi there & thanks for your comment.

The show has been called The Waiting Room for nearly 3 years in its varying FM & interweb homes &, stickler as we are for tradition, we felt it remiss of us to change it simply because (a) we joined WOXY, & (b) other radio stations/shows started using the same name.

Sure, there are historically older TWRs than us out there, but when the research was originally carried out (for we were, many moons ago, called Mind The Crack) we found the majority of exisiting TWRs were actually restaurants or cafe-come-gallery type establishments, rather than radio shows. Therefore, we took a punt. Since then a whole lot more have sprung up - with about 6 in Ireland (on independent/mainstream FM & net) alone.

One thing we can promise as original, however, is a weekly playlist consisting of bands you'd never normally hear on WOXY - & in many cases will never have heard anywhere else. Which is the point of the show. We wouldn't necessarily describe these bands & artists as "no name", because they clearly have a name — they are simply not yet on your listening radar. Stick with us & they soon will be, because new is where they & we are at.

I recommend delving back in the archieved podcasts.

TWR was rather fowl-mouthed back in the good ol' days, eh 1/2DC?

Very nice retort. Really.

You know what I meant by "no name" though. I'm just repeating what most people say about the bands I like.

I'll be checking it out.

may the FOURTH be with you

Hello You.

Normal service, as they say, resumes. Although, can one seriously apply said epithet to the good ship TWR?

The valiant WOXY crew have returned to base camp feeling a little battered, a little older, a little sleep-deprived, yet entirely enriched & enlivened following their 27 live session marathon at this years SXSW festival.

How’s your head? Your sleeping pattern? Started eating solids again, or at least stuff you’ve cooked yourself? Please, please, please have changed your underwear now?? Whose signed album will you post on eBay first? On a scale of 1 - 10, (1 being *meh*, & 10 being what part of move on do you fail to understand?), just how sick are you of the post-SXSW anecdotes by now? If you had to choose between losing your index finger on your writing hand & having an exterior colostomy bag fitted, which one would you go for?

Aaanyway, to the show: TWR WOXY #4.

This week we have the delighful pleasure of bringing to you yet another grab bag of the best new music what is currentry available for you to go out & buy for yourself after hearnig it here.

Amongst said selection this week you shall find:
  • Elizabeth & The Catapult
  • Elvis Perkins
  • Steso Songs
  • Hungry Kids of Hungary
  • Electones
  • Marching Band
  • Speedmarket Avenue
  • Super Furry Animals
  • Portico
  • Draw Me Stories
  • Miniature Tigers
  • Birdlips
  • Miss Emily Brown

& one heap big many more…

Of course, nonsensical chatter & blather is once again peppered throughout your morning’s verbose indulgence courtesy your bleary brained hosts.

Please note, though, all you good Britishers out there in interwebland, that this week’s outing is on Saturday @ 8am ET / 12midday GMT + Sunday @4pm ET / 1pm BST.

That’s right, UK clocks go forward an hour on the Saturday/Sunday cusp & we become subject to British Summer Time. That means an hour’s loss of sleep BUT a hour less to wait for the Sunday show & the podcast thereof the following Monday 8am ET / 1pm BST.

If you want to cheat & know who's actually being played (& in what order) this week, then you can trundle over to the TWRHQ Playlist page for said crib notes.
It remains for us to only say this.

½DC + TWoTH

The Kazoo Funk Orchestra Take The Fifth

Greetings WOXYlings.

This week on TWR we hand the hosting reins over to a Scottish/Canadian band by the name of The Kazoo Funk Orchestra. Why would we do such a thing? Well, back at the end of last year we held a competition inviting bands/artists to write a new theme tune to the show. The prize was, not only to have their music played every week on the show (i.e. the new theme), but to also 'win an entire show', whereby the winners gained control of the playlist & whatever else they wished to do during the 2 allotted hours.

The theme tune that you currently hear topping & tailing each weekly outing is that competition's winning entry. That winning entry belonged to (you guessed, right?): KFO.

Therefore, with minimum interruption from your usual convivials, ½DC + TWoTH, this week you will experience introductions, specially recorded TWR songs + a delightfully eccentric playlist, hand-picked by KFO members (Big Beard, Little Beard, Boyce, Smalls, Part-Time Dave, Mechanical & Herbal).

Amongst the many you shall hear:
  • Architecture In Helsinki
  • Box Club
  • Vic Chestnut
  • Screamin' Jay Hawkins
  • The Broken Family Band
  • The Mad Conductor
  • The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band
  • The Presidents of The United States of America
  • Martin Stephenson
  • Tragic O'Hara
  • The Sweet Serenades
  • Dr. Dog
  • Barry Louis Polisar

+ many, many, many KFO originals culled, by them, from their 3 excellently idiosyncratic albums thus far.

You can garner the entire playlist here on the day of broadcast.

Until then, then.

Hey twentyshots,

This week's show is going to be quite an unusual one - it's somewhat disjointed & zig zags all over the place, what with KFO's little set pieces & the amount of KFO tracks (averaging at 1min40secs each) they're cramming in. I think there's about 40 tracks in total earmarked for the playlist, so, sonically, there will be some befuddlement )

Of course, yours truly + TWoTH'll be popping up hither & thither, throwing our usual nonsense hat into the ring - as the theme, as dictated by KFO, is 'outa space' we've recorded a sci-fi spoof/skit that is either going to be cringingly appalling or just brain-wrongingly confusing. We'll see. We'll just see.

As for Screamin' Jay, well... it's KFO y'all hafta thank for the inclusion as he's on their schedule. I do dig SJH, & the track we're playing is a corker - possibly not one that many people think of or even play that often from his back catalogue - but I am more of a Waitsian kinda fellah.

Anyways, enough ramble. On with the build up to the lead up to the show.

i think "brain-wrongingly confusing" might be my new favorite phrase.

How Do, You.

Due to the unpredictable nature of this year's weather (+ a substantial amount of alcohol-based liquids poured down the throat in celebration of a certain little lady's joyeux anniversaire), this week's show is beset by snuffling illness.

Both ½DC & TWoTH have succummed to a seasonal flu (although, ½DC only really has a half-baked re-visit from a malaise he battled a few weeks ago, whereas TWoTH is wrestling with the full-blown version for the first time & is audibly more nose & throaty).

Therefore chatter & blather is kept to a minimum & the music quota is upped somewhat — we wouldn't want you to catch digi-germs now, would we?

Musically, then, expect such ailment remedies as:

  • Micachu & The Shapes
  • An Horse
  • Ice palace
  • Phil & The Osophers
  • Blue Roses
  • Sons of Noel & Adrian
  • Brakes Brakes Brakes (or, 'Brakes' to you Americans)
  • Tom Williams & The Boat
  • Kelli Ali (ex of Sneaker Pimps)

+ the usual many of the more.

As usual, you'll find us bothering the airwaves on Saturday monring/afternoon @ 8am ET / 1pm BST & again on Sunday afternoon/evening ~ 4pm ET / 9pm BST.

Tune in, like, eh?

Bit of admin:

This weekend sees the TWR team attending the Loose Music Club Easter All-Dayer to interview the wonky indie-popsters The Wave Pictures & the even wonkier twee-popstrels Planet Earth, as well as anyone else of interest.

On Monday we're back to the same venue to interview the superb Edinburgh psych-folk-opera combo Trembling Bells.

Then, next week, we're off to the Fence Collective's annual Homegame Festival in Anstruther, Fife — where we'll be grabbing The Phantom Band for a chat (& hopefully a session, venue quality permitting), as well as a good handful of other bands & artistes playing over the 3 days.

The results of our endeavours will be aired over the coming weeks of May.

Cheers, then, you.

½DC + TWoTH
